Schools of the Diocese of Wheeling–Charleston are required to be accredited institutions. Until recently our schools were accredited by the WV State Department of Education. Legislation that redesigned the accreditation process made no provision for the accreditation of non-public schools.
In the 2000 school year the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston began a relationship with the North Central Regional Accrediting Association. Seven schools had voluntarily been accredited by North Central for a number of years. In the 2002 school year, 22 schools became members of North Central as candidates. The remaining schools will become candidates in the coming school year.
North Central Commission of Accreditation and School Improvement is a regional accrediting agency which accredits not only Elementary, Middle, and High School but colleges and universities as well. North Central was established in 1895 and has 9,000 member schools located in 19 states. The North Central Association requires commission members to follow accrediting processes that foster quality, encourage academic excellence, and improve teaching and learning.
