Education Plus
In addition to a quality academic program, Catholic schools of the Diocese of Wheeling–Charleston provide a well-rounded overall program focusing on the development of the whole child, including a variety of co-curricular, extracurricular and athletic programs.
Service Opportunities- Integral to the mission of Catholic schools is teaching students their responsibility to give back to God by sharing their time, talents, and resources. Schools participate in a variety of service opportunities with service clubs, programs for the poor, global outreach programs ,outreach to shut ins and seniors ,and participation in parish ministries to name but a few.
Co-Curricular - Schools offer a variety programs and competitions to enhance the academic program. These may include participation in academic competitions like Geography and Spelling Bees, Speech and Debate competitions, Science and Social Studies fairs, Quiz teams, Math Counts, and Foreign Language Competitions to name but a few. This combined with a strong commitment to service through projects, clubs, and service hour requirements, students learn the importance of giving back to God and to their communities.
Extracurricular- Elementary and secondary schools provide various opportunities to enhance the academic program by teaching various skills and values in an environment outside of the classroom. Clubs and organizations allow students to work collaboratively on common goals for learning purposes, social recreation and /or to address school or community needs.
Athletics - Catholic High Schools and many Catholic elementary schools offer a variety competitive athletic programs for both boys and girls. Team building, motivation, goal focus and sportsmanship are but a few of the learning outcomes evident in successful sports programs. Catholic schools of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston have a long history of success on the courts and playing fields. Some of the sports offered by schools across the diocese include: Basketball, baseball, football, golf, soccer, wrestling, volleyball, cheerleading, tennis, track, cross country, and swimming.
Family focus- Central to our mission in Catholic schools is a focus on the family. This is evidenced with the various ways parents are involved in their child’s education and how they are involved in the school in general. All schools in the Diocese also provide education in family life as a part of their curriculum.
Preschool and extended care programs- Most schools also provide early childhood education programs for 3 and 4 year olds. To assist working parents in need of safe quality daycare before and after school, many schools provide a fee-for-service extended day programs.
