WEST VIRGINIA—The class of 2009 from the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston’s seven Catholic high schools have obtained nearly $14 million in scholarships and will attend more than 60 colleges and universities in West Virginia and across the U.S.
Graduates of Madonna High School in Weirton, W.Va.; Bishop Donahue Memorial High School in McMechen, W.Va.; Central Catholic High School in Wheeling, W.Va.; Notre Dame High School in Clarksburg, W.Va.; St. Joseph Central Catholic High School in Huntington, W.Va.; Parkersburg Catholic High School; and Charleston Catholic High School have received a wide range of scholarships to many different colleges and universities.
Robyn Hammond, associate superintendent of diocesan Catholic schools, said she is impressed with the accomplishments of the class of 2009. “This year’s graduating class boasted a 98 percent graduation rate,” she said, “far above the average graduation rate at both state and national levels.
“In addition,” she said, “our graduates were offered nearly $14 million in scholarships collectively, clearly a testimonial to the quality of education offered in our schools. These young men and women will attend over 60 different colleges and universities across the country.”
Catholic school graduates were accepted to schools such as American University, Princeton University, Colgate University, Concord College, Brown University, The Catholic University of America, Cornell University, University of Pennsylvania, College of the Holy Cross, Dickenson College, University of Hawaii, Hampton-Sydney College, Johns Hopkins University, Boston College, University of California at Berkeley, University of Denver, Rhodes College, James Madison University, West Texas A&M University, Vanderbilt University, University of West Florida, Carnegie-Mellon University, St. John’s University, Texas Tech University, West Point Military Academy, Dickinson College, St. Vincent College, Eastern New Mexico University, Elon University, Emory University, Hollins University, Mercyhurst College, Loyola University Chicago, Washington & Lee University, University of Chicago, Lehigh University, Slippery Rock University, University of Minnesota, University of Richmond, University of Notre Dame, Oklahoma City University, Washington University, University of Connecticut, Washington & Jefferson College, University of Vermont, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina-Wilmington, Wake Forest University, Gannon University, University of Virginia, Wingate University, Earlham College, University of Dayton, Case Western Reserve University, Clemson University, College of Wooster, University of Tennessee, Xavier University, The Ohio State University, University of Kentucky, Denison University, Duquesne University, Ohio University, Radford University, Penn State University, University of Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech University, Northwestern University, John Carroll University, St. Louis University, High Point University, Villanova University, University of Alabama, University of Maryland, University of South Carolina and Seton Hill University.
A number of this year’s graduates are recipients of the West Virginia Promise Scholarship and will remain in the Mountain State to pursue studies at West Virginia University, West Liberty University, Alderson-Broadus College, University of Charleston, Fairmont State University, Shepherd University, West Virginia Wesleyan College, Bethany College and Marshall University. Many members of the class of 2009 will be attending Wheeling Jesuit University, the state’s only Catholic institution of higher education.
“The graduates of 2009 leave our Catholic schools to enter some of the finest colleges and universities in the country,” said Sister Elaine Poitras, C.S.C., Ph.D., superintendent of diocesan Catholic schools. “It is impressive to see so many young people excited about making a difference in the future. We are confident that these students are not only well prepared academically but also grounded in their faith and commitment to others. We send them forth with our blessings and our prayers as they begin this next step of their life journey.”
