Catholic Schools Light the Way |
CHARLESTON, W.Va.—West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin signed a proclamation recognizing Catholic Schools Week in West Virginia. “I hereby support the goals of Catholic Schools Week and recognize the vital contributions of Catholic elementary and secondary schools,” Gov. Manchin said in the text of the proclamation. Standing with the governor in the West Virginia State Capitol building are John Yelenic, superintendent of Catholic schools of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and a delegation of students and principals from Charleston Catholic High School and St. Agnes School in Charleston.
In the proclamation, Gov. Manchin affirmed the valuable contribution Catholic schools make to West Virginia, as well as their academic excellence. The schools were commended for having a 99 percent graduation rate and for encouraging students to pursue higher levels of education after graduation. Nearly 98 percent of Catholic school graduates undertake post-secondary education, attending more than 60 different colleges and universities. As the largest system of private education in West Virginia, Catholic schools in the state offer a viable alternative to public education and attract families as well as businesses to the state. |
