Catholic Schools Supporters, Students Honored

MORGANTOWN—The Catholic school community of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston gathered March 21 as five individuals were honored with the Bishop's Cross and one student from each of the 32 diocesan Catholic schools and Wheeling Jesuit University were awarded the Aquinas Medal at the annual Bishop's Dinner for Catholic schools.
This year’s Bishop’s Cross recipients were Brann Altmeyer, chair of the Diocesan School Board; Father Colombo F. Bandiera, who oversaw the construction of St. Francis de Sales Parish and St. Francis de Sales Central Catholic School in Morgantown; Mary Grace Peck, a teacher at St. Francis de Sales School in Beckley; Thomas N. Rafferty, president of the Parkersburg Catholic School Board of Education; and Marilyn “Sis” Richardson, principal of St. Michael Parish School in Wheeling.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—Students, benefactors and leaders in Catholic education from across West Virginia will convene for the 16th annual Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Schools March 21 at the Waterfront Place Hotel in Morgantown, W.Va. Most Rev. Michael J. Bransfield, bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, will present the Bishop’s Cross to four lay persons and one priest and the Aquinas Medal, the highest award a student can receive from the diocese, to 33 students.

WEST VIRGINIA—Taking into consideration the theme of this year’s Catholic Schools Week, “Catholic Schools—Dividends for Life,” the diocese’s Department of Catholic Schools is investing, in many ways, in students’ educations and futures, and the 2009-2010 academic year has opened with many new opportunities for students and the diocesan schools they attend.
